Ingredients

  • 4 Pounds Oxtail
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 6 cloves Garlic chopped
  • 3-4 Cloves
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 can Tomato Smash them
  • 3 Bay Leaves
  • 1-2 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 Bunch Fresh thyme
  • 4 cups low sodium beef broth or water
  • 2 Teaspoon Salt (or to taste)
  • 2-3 Teaspoon Red pepper flakes or 1 habanero
  • 3 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • To Prep: Add the oxtail to a ziplock bag along with the garlic, thyme, red pepper flakes, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, cloves and Worcestershire sauce. Place in the fridge overnight. When ready to cook remove the oxtails from the bag and lightly pat dry.
In a large dutch pot, add oil. Heat the oil and brown the oxtail on all side. Remove the oxtails and drain off excess oil. With about 1 tablespoon of oil add the  rest of the marinade and cook for about 5-7 minutes.
Add enough broth or water to just cover the oxtails and bring the mixture to a boil. Lower to a simmer, cover and cook 2 hours. Every 30 minutes for 2 hours add 2 cups of water or broth to keep oxtails covered with liquid.
Bring to a boil then simmer uncovered 2 hours, skimming fat off top and stirring occasionally. In the last 1/2 hour of cook time, season with 2 teaspoon salt. In the last 10minutes of cooking add the gnocchi. Stir well and allow the gnocchi to plump up. Serve warm. Enjoy!

I love this recipe. I make it using my insta pot. I’ve made it using different proteins. Lamb shank, and London broil beef also went well. I also use gluten free gnocchi as well. Thank you so much!

I am absolutely not a soup fan. To me soup is just garnished fancy water, I need something a lot more filling. And stews are all the same for the most part, they are filling but there isn’t a lot of creativity involved. I only said that to highlight just how excited I am to try your recipe. This is not only amazing looking but is also creative, as well as looking very hearty and filling. On the next cold day I’ll be making this for sure 🙂

Hello Ann, this recipe looks amazing. I am usually the one cooking at all of the family gatherings. My father in law just asked me to whip up my oxtail recipe for his birthday next week. So I got online for new ideas. I came across this and your slow cooker recipe. I would love to try both. Leaning towards the gnocchi for his birthday though. My fiance loves my beef stew, and dad loves my oxtail. I figured this would please everyone. you think it would come out well in the slow cooker?

thanks for any advice you can give

    1. HI Richard! Happy birthday to your father-in law when it comes. I think the two recipes can be combined just add the gnocchi to the slow-cooker at the very end- because gnocchi cooks very quickly. I hope you guys enjoy every bit of this stew. Now I am compelled to try out this new slow cooker oxtail and gnocchi stew. Just to be extra! 🙂 🙂

Hi, looks lush. but a bit curious that the recipe notes “low sodium” stock and then bungs in 2 tbs of salt !

    1. Hi James! I’m glad you like the recipe. The thing is with regular broth usually has a lot of salt in it and you really can’t control it. Of course you can use less salt it will still be A okay. I found with the gnocchi and the beef that is the amount that worked. Hope that helps and you enjoy it 🙂
